iPhone storage full? 10 fixes that actually work

Your iPhone keeps saying storage full? Here is how to find what is using your space and get gigabytes back, starting with the fixes that take seconds.

Updated 23 October 2026 · Works on iOS 18, iOS 26 and iOS 27

First, see what is using your space

Open Settings › General › iPhone Storage. The bar at the top shows what takes the most room (usually Photos, Apps, Messages and System Data), and the list below sorts apps by size. Start with the biggest item.

10 fixes, from quickest to biggest

  1. Empty Recently Deleted. Photos you delete stay on your iPhone for 30 days. In the Photos app, open Recently Deleted (under Utilities), tap Select, then Delete All.
  2. Offload apps you don't use. Settings › Apps › App Store › Offload Unused Apps removes unused apps but keeps their data, so they come back as they were.
  3. Remove downloads in streaming apps. Downloaded episodes, songs and podcasts in Netflix, Spotify, Podcasts or YouTube can take several GB. Delete them inside each app.
  4. Clear big Messages attachments. Settings › General › iPhone Storage › Messages shows videos and photos sent in chats. Tap Review Large Attachments and delete what you don't need. You can also set Settings › Apps › Messages › Keep Messages to 1 year.
  5. Clear Safari's cache. Settings › Apps › Safari › Clear History and Website Data.
  6. Clear app caches. Many apps store gigabytes of cache. In TikTok: Profile › menu › Settings and privacy › Free up space. Other apps (Instagram, Telegram, Chrome) have similar options, or you can delete and reinstall them.
  7. Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. If you use iCloud Photos, Settings › Apps › Photos › Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-size originals in iCloud and smaller versions on your phone. It needs enough iCloud space.
  8. Restart and update iOS. A restart clears temporary files, and updates often shrink System Data. Settings › General › Software Update.
  9. Compress your biggest videos. A few long 4K videos can use more space than thousands of photos. Shrinking them keeps the memory and frees most of the space.
  10. Clean your camera roll. Most people have thousands of duplicates, near-identical shots, screenshots and blurry photos. You can review them by hand in Photos (the Duplicates album helps), or use an app that groups them for you.
Clean your camera roll in minutes
CleanPop finds duplicates, similar shots, screenshots and huge videos, lets you swipe to keep or delete, and compresses videos without deleting them. Free to download, with an optional subscription.

Why does my iPhone say storage full when I have nothing on it?

Usually it is hidden data: the Recently Deleted album, Messages attachments, app caches and System Data. Work through fixes 1 to 6 above before deleting anything you care about.

FAQ

Why is my iPhone storage full even after deleting photos?

Deleted photos stay in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days and still use space. Empty that album to get the space back right away.

Does deleting photos on my iPhone delete them from iCloud?

If iCloud Photos is on, yes: deleting a photo on your iPhone deletes it on all your devices and in iCloud. Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage instead if you want to keep everything.

What takes up the most space on an iPhone?

For most people it is photos and videos, followed by apps, Messages attachments and System Data. Check Settings › General › iPhone Storage to see your own split.

Is it safe to use a storage cleaner app?

Use one that works on your device and asks before deleting. With CleanPop, nothing is deleted until you confirm, and deleted photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you can undo mistakes.
